A data-backed look at tech and management hiring in 2026, with the latest figures from India and the U.S. and practical advice for job seekers.

Updated September 24, 2026. Hiring figures below describe recent activity; occupational projections describe possible growth over the next decade. They measure different things and should not be read as guarantees of an individual job offer.

Is the job market recovering or getting harder? For people looking for roles in software, data, product, consulting, operations, or project management, both impressions can feel true. Hiring is uneven across countries and specialties. Employers still need people who can build systems and run teams, but they are being more selective about the problems a new hire will solve.

The current picture: India is growing, while U.S. hiring is cautious

In India, Naukri's August 2026 JobSpeak report put its white-collar hiring index at 3,028, up from 2,664 in August 2025: a 14% year-over-year increase. The same report shows the IT software and software services category up 11% year over year. Strategy and management consulting firms were also up 11%, and accounting and finance was up 14%. These are changes in hiring activity captured by Naukri's platform, not a count of all jobs in India.

Location matters. In that report, year-over-year hiring activity rose 23% in Hyderabad, 20% in Chennai, 14% in Bengaluru and Pune, and 10% in Delhi NCR. A national headline can therefore hide very different local searches. It is worth checking where your target role is actually being advertised before deciding whether relocation or a remote search makes sense.

The U.S. picture is more subdued. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported 162,000 additional nonfarm payroll jobs in August 2026 and an unemployment rate of 4.1%. But information industry employment fell by 23,000 that month. Separately, LinkedIn's September 2026 U.S. workforce report says hiring rose 1.9% in August from July but remained 6.5% below August 2025. Payroll jobs, industry employment, and LinkedIn hiring each measure different parts of the market; together, they suggest a market with openings but tougher competition.

Where tech demand is concentrating

Software engineering is still a large field, but a generic list of languages rarely distinguishes an applicant. Employers increasingly want evidence that a candidate can ship reliable products, work with data, protect systems, and explain trade-offs. The longer-term U.S. outlook supports demand in several of these areas: the BLS 2025-2035 projections estimate 10.2% growth for software developers, or about 174,700 additional jobs. That is a decade-long projection, not a prediction of next month's vacancies.

AI is changing the mix of work, not just creating a separate set of AI job titles. LinkedIn's 2026 labor market research reports that U.S. jobs requiring AI literacy skills grew 70% year over year. The useful skill is more specific than writing "AI" on a resume: show how you evaluated a model's output, reduced a workflow's time or error rate, handled privacy and security, or helped colleagues adopt a tool responsibly.

For a developer, a strong portfolio might show a deployed service, tests, monitoring, and the reasoning behind architectural choices. For a data candidate, it might show a cleaned dataset, a reproducible analysis, and a decision the analysis changed. Security, cloud cost, and data quality also matter because companies must keep systems dependable as they add new capabilities.

Management work is growing, but titles alone are not the signal

Management hiring covers very different jobs: leading people, improving operations, managing delivery, advising clients, and coordinating cross-functional projects. In the U.S., BLS projects 6.2% growth in management occupations from 2025 to 2035, compared with 3.5% across all occupations. Within business roles, it projects 10.1% growth for management analysts and 6.7% for project management specialists. The same table estimates about 94,100 annual openings for management analysts and 76,500 for project management specialists, including openings created when workers leave or change occupations.

Those figures are U.S. projections, so they should not be applied directly to India. Still, they help explain why a manager who can connect strategy to delivery is valuable. In India's latest JobSpeak data, consulting and finance hiring both grew year over year. Across markets, a compelling management application makes the business result visible: faster delivery, lower costs, stronger retention, improved conversion, or a clearer decision made under uncertainty.

For product managers and team leads in particular, technical fluency now helps even when coding is not the job. You should be able to discuss data quality, AI limitations, implementation effort, and the effect of a decision on customers and colleagues. The strongest evidence is a concrete example with a baseline, your action, and a measured result.

  • Pick a role and market. "Tech jobs" is too broad a target. Compare actual postings for your specialty in two or three locations and note the skills that recur.
  • Show outcomes, not task lists. Replace "managed a project" with its scope, the decision you owned, and what improved. For technical roles, link to work that demonstrates reliability and judgment.
  • Prepare for evidence-based interviews. Practice explaining one difficult trade-off, one failure you corrected, and one result you measured. Managers should be ready to discuss stakeholder disagreement; engineers should be ready to discuss design and testing choices.
  • Use AI as a tool you can audit. Be ready to say where it helped, how you checked its work, and when you chose not to use it. A defensible workflow is more persuasive than a vague claim of AI expertise.
  • Track the funnel. Record applications, referrals, screens, and offers. If applications are not turning into screens, refine targeting and your resume. If screens do not turn into offers, focus on interview examples and communication.

The outlook

The 2026 market does not have one simple direction. India's latest platform data show expanding white-collar activity in both tech and management-related industries; U.S. data show slower hiring even as long-term demand for software and management skills remains positive. For candidates, the best response is to narrow the search, prove business impact, and prepare to explain how your work helps a team deliver better results.

Frequently asked questions

Is the tech job market improving in 2026?

+

It depends on the market. Naukri's August 2026 JobSpeak index shows India's white-collar hiring up 14% year over year, with IT software up 11%. U.S. hiring is slower: LinkedIn reports August 2026 hiring 6.5% below August 2025, and information-industry employment fell by 23,000 that month.

Which Indian cities are hiring the most in 2026?

+

In Naukri's August 2026 JobSpeak data, year-over-year hiring activity rose 23% in Hyderabad, 20% in Chennai, 14% in Bengaluru and Pune, and 10% in Delhi NCR. A national figure can hide these gaps, so check where your specific role is actually advertised before deciding to relocate.

How fast are software developer jobs growing?

+

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 10.2% growth for software developers between 2025 and 2035, roughly 174,700 additional jobs. That is a decade-long projection of occupational growth, not a forecast of next month's vacancies, and it does not describe hiring conditions in India or other markets.

Do I need AI skills to get hired in 2026?

+

LinkedIn's 2026 research reports that U.S. jobs requiring AI literacy grew 70% year over year. Listing AI on a resume is not the signal employers want. Show how you evaluated a model's output, cut a workflow's time or error rate, and handled privacy and security concerns.

Are management jobs still growing?

+

BLS projects 6.2% growth in U.S. management occupations from 2025 to 2035, against 3.5% across all occupations. Management analysts are projected to grow 10.1% with about 94,100 annual openings, and project management specialists 6.7% with 76,500. These are U.S. projections and do not transfer directly to India.

How should I change my job search approach?

+

Narrow your target to one role and one market, then compare live postings to find the skills that recur. Replace task lists with measured outcomes. Prepare one trade-off, one corrected failure, and one measured result. Track applications, screens and offers to separate targeting problems from interview problems.
